Dental Disease in Your Pet

More than 70% of dogs and cats develop dental disease by 3 years of age.

Dental disease starts quietly. Plaque hardens into tartar, bacteria work their way below the gumline, and before long the tissues that hold teeth in place start to break down. Pets are very good at hiding mouth pain, so many owners do not notice until the problem is advanced.

Signs to watch for

  • Bad breath
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Yellow or brown buildup on the teeth
  • Chewing on one side, dropping food or pawing at the mouth
  • Loose or broken teeth

Why it matters

Untreated dental disease is painful and can lead to infection and tooth loss. Bacteria from the mouth can also affect other organs, which is why we check teeth at every wellness exam.

Prevention at home

Daily brushing with a pet-safe toothpaste is the gold standard. Dental chews, water additives and dental diets can help too. Ask us which products are right for your pet.

When your pet needs more than home care, our advanced dental care includes full cleanings, digital dental X-rays and extractions when needed.
