The Benefits of Honey

Raw honey is renowned for its healing qualities. The use of raw honey in dogs is rapidly becoming popular, as its flavonoids act as antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

As a hospital that also cares for honeybees, we have a soft spot for this golden ingredient. Used thoughtfully, honey can be a pleasant addition to some dogs' diets. Here is what pet owners should know.

Why people give honey to dogs

  • Antioxidants. Raw, unfiltered honey contains plant compounds such as flavonoids that help the body manage everyday oxidative stress.
  • Soothing a cough. A small amount can coat an irritated throat, much like it does for people.
  • Topical wound care. Medical-grade honey has a long history in wound dressings. Only use it on a wound under your veterinarian's direction.
  • Seasonal comfort. Some owners like local honey during allergy season. Research in dogs is limited, so think of it as a treat rather than a treatment.

How much is safe?

Honey is mostly sugar, so a little goes a long way. As a general guide, small dogs should get no more than about a quarter teaspoon a day and large dogs no more than about a teaspoon. Always ask us first so we can tailor that to your dog.

Skip honey for: puppies under a year old and dogs with weakened immune systems (raw honey can carry botulism spores), dogs with diabetes, and overweight dogs. Never give honey to cats without talking to us first.

The bottom line

Honey is not a cure-all, and it never replaces veterinary care. If your pet has a cough, a wound or a skin problem, give us a call at (480) 598-3669 and we will help you decide whether honey belongs in the plan.
